Music Magazine - Draft Cover

Unedited Photos

The model is looking directly at the camera and wearing indie styled clothing with a fedora hat. I feel that it goes with the indie theme.

Music Magazine- Front Cover Plan

This is my final sketch of my front cover and how i would like it to look. The layout is simple as i do not want too much on the cover because indie magazines are very plain with not a lot of sell lines and pictures.

Additional ideas for design:

Planning Ideas

PLANNING
The genre i chose for my magazine is indie.
Independent music (also known as indie music)is music which is produced independently. Indie music, preferably indie rock music originated in the 1980's, so it is a fairly recent and new genre of music. Because of this it may not appeal to the older generations and more to the younger generation. So i think my target audience would be for teenagers to young adults (14 - 25).

THEME

My magazine does not have a particular theme. However, i want my magazine to be minimal and not be crowed with sell lines and pictures as from my research i have noticed that indie magazines tend to be quite simple. So that is how i would like my magazine to look like.

MASTHEAD

 Possible names -
 Phoenix
 Waved
 Unwind
 Ease
 Melody
I have chosen Phoenix as i think it is different and interesting and i also think the meaning behind the word is nice aswell. 'a person or thing regarded as uniquely remarkable in some respect'.

FRONT COVER STORY
My magazine will be full of the latest and brand new indie artists and music out. It will also have interviews with popular artists. This is so fans of the band or singer will be interested in buying the magazine.
 My headline will be:     LOVELY
sub-headline                 the girl you wish you knew about

SELL LINES
 'The secrets of Lovely's success'
'Exclusive interview with Bliss Souls'
'Indie like never before'
i chose these sell lines as i feel they would intrigue the audience to read more.

MAIN IMAGE
The main image would be a mid shot of one model who is staring directly are the camera with a straight faced expression. I will only have one image on the front cover as i do not want it to be cluttered.

MISE-EN-SCENE
The model (who will be female) will be wearing indie like styled clothing possibly with a fedora hat. The lighting we be directly on her face to enhance her features.

COLOUR SCHEME
The colours i will be using is black, white and a dark turquoise. I feel these colours will looks good on an indie magazine as they do not tend to have much bright colours, So i wanted to keep it simple.

Analysis Of A Music Magazine

The masthead of the magazine is very big and bold for the readers to see, however one of the members of the band is covering some of the masthead. Even though he is covering some of the title, fans of the magazine would recognise the magazine without seeing the full title. The main image is of the band '30 Seconds To Mars' which can be told by the headline which is very bold and clear and is the main focus of the magazine. The connotation is to let people know about the artist and to get them interested in it and to get people and especially fans to buy the magazine. The image is of the three members of the band however, one members image bigger and in front on the masthead to show the importance of the member as he is probably the lead singer. Because the picture of him is bigger than the other members, this shows that each member could has taken their pictures separately or it could of been taken with them all together but he is standing in front of them. The members of the band are looking directly at the camera which brings them closer to the audience, they are also wearing black leather jackets with the collar flared up to make them look cool and mysterious. The text in the skyline is large and bold so it makes it stand out and grabs the readers attention and makes them want to read on. The coverline is to give a preview of what is in the magazine and makes the reader interested and want to read on. The pictures at bottom give the reader an insight of whats in the magazine and the button which says 'Guitar Gods Poster Special' also intrigue the reader as they are getting free posters in the magazine.

Final Front Cover

WWW: I think my masthead and headline is very bold and noticeable for the readers, i also think the choice of colours is good as they are easily readable bright and bold enough to see. I think the image is good as it is relevant to what the magazine is about. The students are holding up university prospectus' which links to the headline which is 'Tips for university interviews'. From the happy expression on their faces it shows the excitement on going to uni. I also think the choice of having a boy and girl on the cover is good as it shows the magazine is for all genders. The button is bold as people can clearly identify the price of the magazine. The sublines are bold and are easy to read, the choice of sublines lets the readers know what other content is in the magazine. The banner draws in the attention of readers as they are getting something for free.

EBI: One of the main issues i would change is to re-take the picture as it is a little blurry. But it was the only one i took in which the people were in the middle of the shot.

Sketch Of Front Cover

Analysis On A Front Cover

The masthead is very bold and is a bright colour which is hot pink so it catches the readers attention. The headline is the first thing you see on the magazine which is '500' and it is also in hot pink so it is bright and bold. I think it is the biggest text as comso want to emphasise that this is their 500th issue. Their is a range of sublines on the magazine, ranging from size, colour and boldness and they are telling me what is in the magazine. The picture is of a woman holding balloons, so it shows that their is a celebration happening (in reference to their 500th issue). The woman is looking directly at the camera which connects the reader as it is direct address. One subline is bold and pink, which could show that, that story is more important than the other sublines as it is brighter and bolder than the other.
